The Nereids are the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris who dwell in the Mediterranean Sea. These beautiful women were friendly and assisted sailors battling deadly storms. They are believed to be "seers" and belong to the company of Poseidon, greek god of the Sea. This particular painting was inspired by photos of the "Fontana de Netuno" in Florence, Italy (Neptune being the Roman version of Poseidon). She was one of the sculptures included in the Fountain. It is an extremely textural piece using thick paint strokes and painted over a canvas which had been painted on a few times. It resides in a private collection.
